Important Questions To
Ask Your Local Shelter |
- How long do you keep stray animals before they are available for adoption or euthanized? This amount of time is generally referred to as a “stray hold.”
- Which days of the week does the stray hold include? Most oftentimes, the stray hold only includes days that the shelter is open to the public (therefore holidays and normal days that the shelter is closed should be excluded).
- Do you pick up dead animals? If so, were any picked up near my house?
- Do you pick up injured animals? If so, were any picked up near my house? Where are they located now? (At the shelter? A veterinary office?)
- Does the shelter have a website where I can view the animals that have recently arrived? Are all animal photographed? How often is the website updated?
- How would I know if a good samaritan has found my pet and did not wish to leave it at the shelter? Is there a form they would fill out?
- Ask if both stray cats and stray dogs are picked up by animal control officers. Most oftentimes, only stray dogs are picked up.
